Term 2 Big Ideas
The following is meant to provide parents with a snapshot of anticipated learning in Term2 for the core subjects. Each subject has a "big idea" and skills focus to indicate how they will be assessed.

Computational fluency and flexibility with numbers extend to operations with whole numbers and decimals.
- Connect mathematical concepts to each other and to other areas (i.e. analyzing graphs from NASA of climate change evidence)
- Use reasoning and logic to explore, analyze, and apply mathematical ideas
Math 7 students finished Integers in January, and will be finishing this term with Fractions, Decimals, and Percents. Please contact [email protected] if you have questions.
Science
6: The solar system is part of the Milky Way, which is one of billions of galaxies. (Gr.6's will be learning about NASA's involvement in studying climate change)

Supporting transference at home:
In our professional development, we (Carisbrooke teachers) have been having many discussions about how we encourage our students to transfer their knowledge and reach Practicing/ Extending. Since we have such a supportive base of parents at Carisbrooke, I realized that perhaps some parents were also wondering, How can I help my child reach Practicing (and maybe even the ominous Extending)?
Supporting good work habits such as using their agendas, spending time on homework, and completing assignments in detail are a great start. Practicing/ Extending is focused on transference, which is making connections (often to real world examples), or applying their knowledge in new creative ways which have not been explicitly modelled to them. Some ways for students to continue to develop this skill (transference) at home are:
- Discussing currents events and connecting them to what they are learning in school
- Experiential learning in their community (volunteering, visiting new places, cultural events, or hands-on projects at home)
- Reflecting on their learning at home
- Encourage curiosity and record their questions
I already see that many of you already do these things, from the discussions I have with your children in class :) The students get excited when they make these connections to home/ the world, and it makes their learning more meaningful to them.
